As our last 2 successful events, there will be members of CAFTCAD, Costume Industry Businesses and Individuals, and Vintage Dealers selling clothing and items from past productions and other wares to the general public. Clothing, both contemporary and vintage, accessories, fabrics, books, and wardrobe supplies will be offered at this one day event.

PLEASE NOTE that the sale will NOT be taking place at 629 Eastern Ave as it has in the past. The location is still to be confirmed.

Vendor Packs will be sent out in the next few weeks so please let us know if you're interested in participating in this sale.

In October CAFTCAD was given the opportunity to purchase the late Vicki Graef's reference library. It contains over 300 books on fashion and art and many boxes of fashion magazines. The purchase price is $2000.00 but is worth much more in its value as a working reference library for wardrobe professionals and enthusiasts.
To date we have raised just over half of the money and we ask that all who can afford to, please make a donation to help us reach our goal. Thank you so much to those who have generously assisted with the cause.

Donationed Goods Needed for ZAMUXOLO Daycare Centre

Wotever Inc., a CAFTCAD Member, is organizing donations for a container of dry goods for the Zamuxolo Daycare and Orphanage in Capetown. The children, infants to 15 years of age, live in a shanty town of Capetown and have nothing and sleep on dirt floors which commonly become mud floors when it rains.

Bridgit Faroo, owner of Wotever says,
"My friend Glenda's sister in South Africa (Nadia) is spearheading this
grassroots fundraiser. Anything given or donated will be going directly to
the children and centre (actually a shack!). Nadia will be making sure that
when the container arrives in Capetown that it will be distributed directly
to the kids and caregivers."

Over fifty artists in the Toronto film industry from costumer makers to scenic painters have gathered to present an exhibit of their 'off camera' creations to share with the public at the newly opened Filmport Studios.

The various mediums will surprise from the traditional painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography, to unique methods of screen printing, collage, film making, textiles, music, multi media assemblage and more.
The event will feature a silent auction, musical performances and a film screening.

We can see why Toronto film production is known for such a high calibre of work when you see this exhibit.

The Off Camera Group is organized by volunteers from the film workers community represented by IATSE local 873 and The DGC Ontario.

From the Set to the Screen: El Greco is a behind- the -scenes look at many of the costumes and set pieces used in the making of this film.

Costumed designed by Lala Huete and art directed by Damianos Zarifs and Oriol Puig, the sumptuous costumes and detailed props bring to life the story of the 16th century Greek artist and freedom fighter Domenicos Theotokopoulos, otherwise known as El Greco.

Bob Willoughby: "Vintage Hollywood"

“Vintage Hollywood” presents Bob Willoughby’s original vintage prints from the great classic films of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, as well as the famous icons of Hollywood cinema.

In 1954, Willoughby was assigned to photograph Judy Garland in the film 'A Star Is Born'. He worked so well with Garland that Warner Brothers asked him to return to photograph the ‘Lose that Long Face’ sequence. This was unprecedented as he became the first ‘special’ photographer to work on what were always closed film sets. This assignment resulted in his first Life Magazine cover and forged a twenty-year collaboration with the publicity departments of the major studios and feature magazines of the time.

Little stories told with threads & beads

Though only about twelve inches high, these bits of fantastical clothing are full of hand crafted elements that Ann learned from her grandmothers and aunts as well as from the world-class seamstresses, tailors and breakdown artists that she has worked with at the Canadian Opera Company and feature film productions.

Ann has an eye for detail and colour and just as she has always been drawn to movie projects that emphasize the development of character – so too are these “garments” indeed characters in their own right.

Her whimsical sense of humour and joyful delight in beautiful handcrafted objects are evident in her art, which is truly meant to bring a smile along with a better appreciation of the meaning of “getting dressed”!

On June 3rd we held our General Meeting at Toronto Film Studios, Toronto.

It was inspiring to see a room of costume people, from all sectors of our industry together, engaged and interested in our various initiatives.

Besides various individuals, there was a strong showing from most of the Rental houses in the city, including Juul Haalmeyer from Homemade Tarts, Olivier Normand @ Tribe Trading Co., Ken McGuire from Liberty, Caitlin Webster @ The Wearhouse and Tarah Burke from Apres Wrap. Also present was Bridget Faroo from 'Wotever.,

All in all there was a real positive mood towards the Alliance.

Thanks to all that made it out and stay tuned, we're just getting started.

A History of Toronto's Garment Industry

A Common Thread chronicles the history of the garment industry that began over one hundred years ago and centred around Spadina Avenue.

Photographs, vintage clothing and other items including old sewing machines provide a colourful backdrop to this fascinating aspect of Toronto's history. This exhibit explores a wide variety of issues such as immigrant opportunities, working conditions, union activity as well as individual stories of those who worked in this industry.

Curated by Dorion Liebgott of the Beth Tzedec Reuben and Helene Dennis Museum and supported with a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, this exhibit highlights the Jewish community which was an integral part of the industry's development and which still closely identifies with the trade. The exhibit also looks at other immigrant groups including Italians, Greeks, Portuguese and Asians who have also contributed to the success of the local garment industry.

The core group has met and finalized a Constitution and set of By-laws for the Association. Presently the paperwork is in the hands of the lawyers and we should be incorporated within the next 10 days.

Congratulations to Everyone! CAFTCAD is now a reality.
CAFTCAD will be our organization to form, shape and grow as needed.
